Mel Brooks did the music and lyrics as well as the book. It is directed by Susan Stroman and starred Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The musical won 12 Tony Awards, which took the top spot held for 37 years by Hello Dolly! which previously held 10 Tonys. The Broderick/Lane duo had worked together in the past, as the voices of Simba and Timon in The Lion King movie. When the two were replaced, the show suffered, and they were brought back for another run.
