Debuting in 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the instant success of the play catapulted it to Broadway's New Amsterdam Theater in just 3 months. Versions have played in London, Toronto and in June of 2006, the musical moved to a new home at the Minskoff Theatre where it remains today, selling out the box office with regularity.

The story of Simba the lion is one of trials, overcoming obstacles and growing up. His father, King Mufasa and his mother Queen Sarabi school their cub on the Circle of Life, and the delicate balance between everything in nature. Simba's evil uncle Scar plays the antagonist, tempting Simba into dangerous but appealing acts that could mean his demise. Scar is attempting to become King.

After Scar leaves Simba in a gorge to be attacked, Scar leads Mufasa to save his son, betrays him and throws him into a stampede where he is killed. Scar blames Simba, and sends him into exile. Almost dead from heat exhaustion, two new friends find him and save Simba's life, raising him in the jungle. The story of Simba's adulthood and his attempt to reclaim his throne have won the production Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting, Choreography, and Best Direction of a Musical.
