Directed by Gary Griffin, the musical is produced by Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones. Oprah played the role of Sofia in the film version. The Color Purple tells the story of Celie, a woman whose life has been fraught with adversity since she was a child. Suffering at the hands of men for most of her life, she grows with the strength to find herself and learns about love. The musical received five Audience Awards including Favorite New Broadway Musical. It was also nominated for 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical in the 2005-06 season.

The 2007 season will see popular new stars taking over some of the roles in the musical. Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child will play Shug Avery, and Season three front runner LaToya London will play Nettie, Celie's sister. The play took eight years for producer Scott Sanders to gain permissions and funding to produce, and the result has inspired theatre-goers time and again. The themes dealt with in the play include domestic violence, racial oppression, rape, infanticide and spiritual crisis. It is about overcoming such injustices and rising above to a better place.
