The music is written by Phil Collins. Opening on Broadway May 10, 2006 at Rodgers Theatre, Tarzan is the fifth Disney musical to be adapted for Broadway. Danton Burroughs, grandson of the author of the original stories, was present at the opening night. The musical received a Tony for Best Lighting Design in 2006.

The story begins when a ship-wreck leaves an infant stranded on the West African shore. A gorilla finds the baby and keeps it as her own, making him part of the family. One day in the forest, a gunshot is heard and Tarzan sees the first humans he has ever seen, Jane Porter and her father, Professor Porter as well as their guide Clayton. Tarzan saves Jane from some baboons, while the rest of the gorillas destroy the humans' camp. The gorillas distrust the humans, but Tarzan returns to the camp where he learns English and about the human world he has never seen. When the human visitors are ready to return to England, Tarzan wishes to go, before Clayton kills the gorilla leader. Tarzan then becomes the head of the group, and Jane elects to stay on the island with him.
