It first appeared at the Eurovision Song Contest April 30th of that year. The first full-length version was performed February of 1995 in Dublin. Touring companies continue to bring the performance to lovers of the dance around the world. Each tour is named after a river in Ireland. The Boyne company tours North America, and Avoca and Foyle can be seen in Europe. Current touring productions are half the size of the original production. The show blends Irish history with Celtic mythology. The popularity of the show has prompted the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, to proclaim March 15th Riverdance Day in the city.

There have been 28 marriages between Riverdance company members since the show started. The dancers' bodies are known for remaining still as well as their arms, while their feet fly through the numbers they perform. Stepdancing is the most widespread of Irish forms of dancing, due in part to the success of Riverdance. The stars of the original cast were Michael Flatley and Jean Butler. The chemistry between the two is legendary.
