It was May 23, 2000 before the show made it over to the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, Ontario. The Broadway premiere was October 18, 2001. It was less than four years before the musical surpassed the original Broadway runs of The King and I, The Sound of Music and Damn Yankees wth 1,500 performances. In June of 2005, Mamma Mia! performed for the 1,000th time in Las Vegas, making it the longest running, most successful Broadway play ever in Las Vegas theater history.

The story takes place on an imaginary Greek isle, with the main character Sophie, who is searching for her father. She narrows the search down to three men she believes may be her father because of an entry in her mother's diary. She invites the three men to her wedding along with two women who used to be in a singing band with her mother, Donna. It's determined over the course of the wedding preparations that it will remain undetermined who her true father is, but they are all content to be a part of her life.

Mamma Mia tickets for the Broadway production of the hit musical has prompted a movie version of the ABBA inspired show. The hit show made such a splash on Broadway that the stars lined up for the film are such big names as Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters and Colin Firth.
