When she is chosen to dance on the "Corny Collins Show" in Baltimore, she becomes an overnight celebrity, and uses her newfound power to racially integrate the show. Playing at Neil Simon Theatre on Broadway since 2002, the musical has also made its rounds across the country. A film is planned for 2007. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, and received eight of them. The awards included Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Featured Actor, Best Costume Design and Best Direction of a Musical. It also received a Grammy in 2002 for its soundtrack album.

Set in 1962, the musical explores such themes as racial equality, weight issues and marginalization. The main character Tracy has a big body and big hair, and the size of her heart outweighs all of these elements. Using her celebrity to make a difference in the world, she proves that she can also get the guy and oust the traditional stereotypes. The running time is 2 hours and 40 minutes.
