The musical is a satire that explores the issues of corruption in the criminal justice system in prohibition-era Chicago. It also touches on notion of the "celebrity criminal." Many of the musical numbers in the play were based on traditional vaudeville. The musical itself is based on the novel Chicago by Maurine Dallas Watkins, who was a reporter that covered the murder trials of two women for the Chicago Tribune. Her column was so popular that she decided to write a play, and it made it all the way to Broadway.

When it was revived for the 1996 production, Chicago was able to recoup its initial costs faster than any other musical. This is possibly due to the simplicity of the stage and costumes. It holds the honor of being the longest revival running currently on Broadway. It is overall the eighth longest running musical. The popularity of the musical carried over to the successful 2002 film and "All that Jazz" was played at former President Clinton's second inauguration in 1997.
