Composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical was based on the poems of T.S.Eliot, namely "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." It is one of the most popular musicals ever, and has been translated into over 20 languages. The image used to promote the musical, Cat's eyes, the irises are meant to represent the image of dancers. A film version of the musical was produced in 1998, by Andrew Lloyd Webber as well.
The show developed from a desire by Webber to challenge himself and see if he could set existing words to music. Revision took place to some of the original score once it got to Broadway, specifically to "The Ballad of Billy McCaw." The second life of Cats has tightened the score somewhat and has seen great success in its travelling version as well as the production in London.
The musical Cats joins several Broadway plays in the process of breaking records on the list of the all-time longest running shows. Second to The Phantom of the Opera, which is still running as well, as of April 29, 2007, Cats' standing was at 7485 performances on Broadway.
